Unwavering Faith - A Devotional on 2 Chronicles 15:7
"But as for you, be strong and do not give up, for your work will be rewarded."
2 Chronicles 15:7
Introduction
Picture the moment when American abolitionist Harriet Tubman stood at the threshold of a path that led towards freedom. The night was likely dark and the journey ahead treacherous, fraught with danger and uncertainty. In the face of such perilous odds, it would have been easy to succumb to fear, to step back and seek safety. But she did not. Tubman pressed on, fueled by a profound faith in the righteousness of her cause and the ultimate value of her work, leading hundreds of slaves to freedom through the Underground Railroad. She must have drawn strength from an unshakable belief in the promise of reward - not a reward for herself, but for those she helped escape the shackles of oppression.
Devotional on 2 Chronicles 15:7
In the context of King Asa's rule in 2 Chronicles 15:7, we find a parallel affirmation of faith and dedication. Following a period of spiritual and moral decline, Asa took up the mantle to lead the nation back to God. This was a tall order. His reforms included removing idols from the entire land, restoring the altar of the Lord, and gathering the people for a covenant renewal.
Asa’s dedication to reform extended to his own family, a decision which undoubtedly caused personal and political tension. He deposed his grandmother Maacah, as queen mother because she had set up an Asherah pole (an idol) in the Temple (2 Chronicles 15:16). It was an uncomfortable but necessary act, a testament to his commitment to cleanse Judah of its idolatry.
Asa's reforms were met with great resistance. He faced opposition from within his kingdom and threats from hostile neighbors. Nevertheless, he did not waver. His faith and dedication, even in the face of opposition, aligned with the divine encouragement given to him in 2 Chronicles 15:7: "But as for you, be strong and do not give up, for your work will be rewarded."
King Asa’s commitment reflects a principle echoed throughout the Bible - unwavering faith and commitment to God are noticed and rewarded by Him. Joseph, despite being sold into slavery, remained faithful and was granted favor and success (Genesis 39:2-5). In Galatians 6:9, Paul encourages the church in Galatia not to grow weary of doing good, for in due season, they will reap a harvest if they do not give up. Near the end of his own life, Paul was confident of receiving a "crown of righteousness" as a reward for his faithful service (2 Timothy 4:7-8). In James 1:12, those who withstand trial are also promised the crown of life.
The story of Asa is a powerful testament to the challenges and rewards of standing strong in faith, even in the face of adversity. His dedication in the midst of opposition reflects the courage and resolve of figures like Harriet Tubman, highlighting the timeless truth that our efforts, when grounded in faith, are never in vain. This principle, seen in Asa's experience, remains applicable to us today.
Application
Living in a culture that heavily emphasizes speed, efficiency, and immediate gratification can often lead us to grow impatient or disillusioned when our efforts don't yield instantaneous results. This verse, however, calls us to a different standard. It encourages us to persist in our faith, our responsibilities, and our godly endeavors, trusting in God's timing and divine justice. It challenges us to uphold our commitments, even when the rewards are not immediately apparent or when we face resistance or setbacks. Our faithfulness is not unseen or unacknowledged; it is seen, cherished, and will be rewarded by God, in His perfect timing and in His perfect way. This powerful truth should motivate us to stay the course in our spiritual journey and remain unwavering in our service to God and others.
Prayer for the Day

Thank You for the reminder in Your Word that my work for You will not be in vain. I ask for the strength to continue serving You and others, even when the path is challenging. Help me to shine Your light in this world and bear witness to Your enduring love and faithfulness. In the name of Jesus I pray. Amen.
