23 Bible Verses about Grace

The dictionary defines grace as "the free and unmerited favor of God, as manifested in the salvation of sinners and the bestowal of blessings." In other words, grace is God's undeserved kindness. It is His gift to us, given freely and without any strings attached.

God’s grace toward us originates in His character. God is “merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love” (Exodus 34:6). God wants to bestow blessings upon his creation (Psalm 103:1-5). He delights in the welfare of His servants (Psalm 35:27).

God’s ultimate act of grace is the salvation He provides through Jesus Christ. The Bible tells us that we are saved by grace through faith in Jesus (Ephesians 2:8). This means that our salvation is not earned or deserved; it is a free gift from God. And how do we receive this gift? By putting our faith in Jesus Christ. When we put our trust in Him, He forgives our sins and gives us eternal life (John 3:16).

We also experience God's blessings through gifts of grace (Ephesians 4:7). The Greek words for grace (charis) and spiritual gifts (charismata) are related. Spiritual gifts are expressions of God's grace, designed to strengthen and build up the body of Christ. Jesus gives leaders to the church to equip his followers for ministry. When each person uses the spiritual gifts they have received, the church grows in love for God and one another (Ephesians 4:16).

When we receive God's grace, it changes everything. We are forgiven, loved, and given eternal life. We also receive spiritual gifts that enable us to serve others and build up the body of Christ. As we grow in our understanding of God's grace, may we also grow in our thankfulness for all that He has done for us.

God is Gracious

For the Lord your God is gracious and compassionate. He will not turn his face from you if you return to him.

John 1:16-17

Out of the fullness of his grace he has blessed us all, giving us one blessing after another. God gave the Law through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

Saved by Grace

Romans 3:23-25

For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God's righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins.

Romans 5:1-2

Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God.

Romans 11:5-6

So too at the present time there is a remnant, chosen by grace. But if it is by grace, it is no longer on the basis of works; otherwise grace would no longer be grace.

For by grace you have been saved by faith. Ephesians 2:8-9

Ephesians 2:8-9

For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.

2 Timothy 1:8-10

Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord, nor of me his prisoner, but share in suffering for the gospel by the power of God, who saved us and called us to a holy calling, not because of our works but because of his own purpose and grace, which he gave us in Christ Jesus before the ages began, and which now has been manifested through the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.

Titus 3:5-7

He saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that being justified by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

Living by God’s Grace

Romans 6:14

For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.

1 Corinthians 15:10

But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me was not in vain. On the contrary, I worked harder than any of them, though it was not I, but the grace of God that is with me.

2 Corinthians 9:8

And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work.

2 Corinthians 12:9

But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

2 Timothy 2:1-2

You then, my child, be strengthened by the grace that is in Christ Jesus, and what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also.

Titus 2:11-14

For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age, waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works.

Hebrews 4:16

Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

James 4:6

But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”

Gifts of Grace

Romans 6:6-8

Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; if service, in our serving; the one who teaches, in his teaching; the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity; the one who leads, with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness.

1 Corinthians 12:4-11

Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone.

To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues.

All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills.

Ephesians 4:11-13

And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.

1 Peter 4:10-11

As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace: whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies—in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.

A Blessing of Grace

Numbers 6:24-26

The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace.

A Prayer for God’s Grace

Blessed are you, oh God. For you are gracious and merciful to me. Apart from your grace I would be completely lost. I confess that I am in need of your grace and your forgiveness. I have sinned against you and my fellow man. I have been selfish and self seeking, putting my needs above those of my friends and family. Thank you that your grace is sufficient for me. Help me to walk in your ways and to live each day by the grace you provide, so that I may glorify you in all that I do. Amen.
